- MY AMAZON PINK DRESS & MY TOP PICKS
Hi, Darlings! Oh my, I rarely ever post my ready-to-wear looks because honestly, I think I wear mostly me-made clothes outside of jeans and stuff. I did however buy a few dresses on Amazon a few weeks back because I was curious about the quality after having seen other influencers rocking Amazon fits. I bought this pink dress below and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it's made, how good the fabric is, and that it's fully lined. I wore this dress out and loved it! I also bought a green one and that one was really great too. I haven't photographed it yet but I will. Here are some of my recent obsessions and things I LOVE that I purchased on Amazon. PINK DRESS GREEN DRESS MY AMAZING MOST BEAUTIFUL FAN, LOL MY INCREDIBLY COMFORTABLE CLOUD SANDALS (I have these in every color) MY FAVORITE POTS AND PANS (granite induction, nonstick) HEADPHONES STAND ( this is amazing on my desk) MY PINK DRESS Thank you for reading! xoxo
- My Sewing Book Is Here! Features and Extras
Hi Darlings! After two years of working on my book it has finally hit stores and I am not sure it has fully hit me yet. The magnitude of being an author and having published my first book has been quite the experience. I am so blown away by the amount of comments, encouragement, excitement and support you guys have shown me. I was sold out amazon by the next day and some retailers are currently on back order, thank you for this! I have been posting almost daily about the book but I wanted to share a few things that I really love about the book and that I am hoping will be helpful to you. ORDER HERE: AMAZON, BARNES & NOBLE, INDIGO, POWELL'S BOOKS, BOOKS-A-MILLION DIGITAL FILES My book includes the seven base patterns that I use to hack and create an additional 18 patterns but I should mention that as with all sewing books that contain patterns in the back they are always layered over each other which means you have to trace the pattern pieces and can't cut. For some this is no problem for others they prefer having digital files. The great news is that as an extra bonus when you purchase the book you can EMAIL my team with proof f purchase and you will get an email with the link to the digital PDF as well as the copy shop files. MY SEWING BOOK PURPOSE I am always listening to what fans and followers say about patterns and their fear of drafting, hacking or even just adding to existing commercial patterns and so my purpose with my book is to remove that fear and widen peoples view of working with patterns. Understanding that a pattern is simply a guide and you can and should always look at a pattern and imagine what else you can create with that one pattern. This book is a guide to expanding you creativity, removing fear and simplifying the process. Pattern-making and hacking can be intimidating but I truly believe this book will show you an easy and fearless way to dive in which in turn will open your eyes to the possibilities the next time to you look at a pattern and wish it had pockets or a different length, or a certain shape. You will be able to look at that pattern and instead say I can add pockets, change the length or even the shape and do so with confidence. FABRIC CHANGES EVERYTHING I created over 100 looks from the 18 patterns we draft in the book by simply making them out of various fabrics. In many instances the fabric choice changes the entire look of a pattern. The shacket for example looks completely different when made out of denim and turns into beautiful oversized, dropped shoulder button up shirt when made with a cotton or rayon. You would not think that both are made from the same pattern. This is the case with so many of the hacks I chose to design for the book. There is something for everyone! I am so excited to finally share this huge milestone in my life and I thank you so much for the support. Please share with your friends, repost on socials and lets make this the best sewing book ever. SOME LOOKS! Here are a few looks from the book, Thank you! - SEW ALONG FOR MY ONE-SHOULDER DRESS WITH TIPS ON SEWING SILKY FABRICS
HI, DARLINGS! I have uploaded the sew-along for my one-shoulder dress and it is a quick and easy make. There are just a few pattern pieces that make this a fun dress to sew up. The pattern uses one bodice piece for the front and back and one skirt piece for the front and back. You can check out the sew-along below. I decided to make this dress using a silky print so let me share a few tips that can help you work with slippery fabrics if you choose to do the same. TIPS FOR SEWING SILKY FABRICS Sewing is so much fun however, if you've ever tried to sew silky or slippery fabrics, you'll know that they can be a bit tricky to work with so I am going to share some helpful tips for sewing with these challenging materials. 1. Use the right needle When sewing with slippery fabrics like silk or satin, it's important to use the right needle. A sharp, fine needle will give you the best results, as it will help to avoid damaging the delicate fabric. Look for needles that are specifically designed for use with lightweight fabrics. 2. Use a stabilizing spray Stabilizing spray can be a lifesaver when it comes to sewing slippery fabrics. A light spray of stabilizing spray on your fabric before cutting and sewing will help to keep the fabric in place and prevent it from shifting around too much. 3. Use weights instead of pins Pinning slippery fabrics can be difficult because the pins tend to slip out of place. To avoid this problem, try using weights instead. You can use heavy objects like cans of food or metal washers to hold your fabric in place while you cut and sew. 4. Use tissue paper Another helpful trick for sewing slippery fabrics is to use tissue paper. Simply lay a piece of tissue paper over your fabric before sewing. The tissue paper will help to stabilize your fabric and keep it in place, while also preventing it from snagging or getting caught in your machine. 5. Sew slowly and carefully When sewing slippery fabrics, it's important to take your time and work carefully. Sew slowly and use a light touch, as this will help to prevent puckering and other fabric irregularities. Sewing with slippery fabrics can be challenging, but with these helpful tips, you can achieve beautiful results every time. Happy sewing! THE LOOK! Because my sew-along is not a learn-to-sew video I wrote some tips below on sewing with knits. TIPS FOR KNIT SEW-ALONG Knit fabrics are excellent for the summer season as they are stretchy, comfortable, and can be form-fitting or loose-fitting. If you're new to sewing with knit fabrics, here are some tips to get you started: 1. Use a ballpoint needle: Knit fabrics are prone to stretching out and ripping if you use a regular needle. A ballpoint needle is designed to be gentle on knit fabrics, allowing you to sew without damaging the material. 2. Use a stretch stitch: A stretch stitch is designed to move with the fabric, preventing it from ripping or tearing. Using a zigzag stitch is also a reliable option. 3. Finish the edges: Knit fabrics don't fray like woven fabrics do, but they can still benefit from some finishing touches. You can finish the edges with a serger or by using a zigzag stitch on your regular sewing machine. SEW ALONG
- DIY LACE PANTS AND TUBE TOP WITH TIPS ON SEWING
Learn to Sew with me! Check out sewitacademy.com and sign up for our free trial. HI DARLINGS! This is the third pair of the SEW IT ACADEMY sweatpants which I made HERE and HERE. I am obsessed with these and for good reason. I can make them out of so many fabrics and get very different looks. This is one of the courses in Sew It which also comes with copy shop and PDF patterns. It has become a very popular course. Sewing with lace can be really fun but can also be frustrating. The delicate fabric is beautiful and adds a touch of femininity to any garment, but it requires some skill and patience to sew properly. There are some tips below on sewing DIY lace pants and using proper sewing machine settings to help you master lace sewing. TIPS FOR SEWING DIY LACE PANTS Choose the right needle and thread! When sewing with lace, it is essential to choose the right needle and thread. Use a fine needle, preferably a size 8 or 9, to prevent snagging or damaging the delicate fabric as you sew or handle it. Use a walking foot: Lace can be slippery, and it can easily shift and become uneven while sewing. Using a walking foot ensures a smooth and even feed of the fabric, preventing any distortions or shifting in the lace. Adjust the tension and stitch length: The tension on your sewing machine plays a vital role in the final outcome of your project. A high tension may result in puckering. Adjust the tension and stitch length accordingly, aiming for a stitch that is smooth and even without any gathers or puckers. Test on scrap fabric first: It's always a good idea to test on scrap fabric before starting to sew on the lace. This allows you to experiment with different settings and techniques until you find the optimal result. Use good quality lace: Quality plays a role in the ease of sewing with lace. Cheap, low-quality lace is often stiff, which makes it more challenging to maneuver and sew. Good quality lace is softer and more flexible, allowing for smoother sewing with fewer problems. Sewing with lace is not terribly hard, but it does require some patience and skill. Follow these tips and proper machine settings to make your lace sewing experience enjoyable and rewarding! Remember to take your time, practice on scrap fabric, and use quality materials. XOXO Mimi G

- TIPS FOR SEWING A MESH DRESS
HI DARLINGS! I came across this fabric at Joann and I knew I had to have it. I immeditaly saw my SIMPLICITY #9701 pattern in my head. Sewing with mesh fabric can be a bit tricky, but the results are worth the effort. Using printed mesh fabric can create stunning and unique designs that are perfect for a so many projects. Today I will share my thoughts on how to sew with mesh fabrics. TYPES OF MESH First, let's talk about the different types of mesh fabric available. Mesh fabric is made up of a series of small holes that allow air and moisture to pass through. It'S often used in athletic wear and as a lining for jackets and bags. There are several different types of mesh fabrics, including nylon, polyester, and spandex. Each has its own characteristics, so it's important to choose the right one for your project. This mesh has a great amount of stretch which makes a perfect bodycon dress. TIPS FOR SEWING WITH MESH Once you pick out your mesh fabric, it's time to start sewing. One of the most important things to keep in mind when sewing with mesh fabric is to choose the right needle! A universal needle will work, but a ballpoint needle or stretch needle is best. These needles have a rounded tip that will glide over the fabric without snagging or catching. When sewing, be sure to handle the fabric gently to avoid snagging or stretching. I snagged my fabric on my wedding ring so be careful! Use a zigzag stitch or an overlock stitch to finish the raw edges of the fabric or you can also use a french seam to finsh. Be sure to test your stitch on a scrap piece of fabric before sewing your final project. You may need to adjust your tension or stitch width to find the right balance. Finally, when it's time to press your fabric, be sure to use a pressing cloth. The heat from the iron can melt or distort the mesh fabric, so it's important to protect it with a layer of fabric, I like to use a piece of organza as my pressing cloth. Use a low heat setting and move the iron quickly over the fabric. When it comes to lining I used a nude stretch lining but you could use a contrast color lining or even leave your garment unlined if you lan to wear it over a dress or leggings. Sewing with mesh fabric and prints can be a fun and rewarding experience. By choosing the right fabric, print, and sewing techniques, you can create unique and beautiful projects that are sure to stand out. This print was so fun and retro so I paired it with my DIY SHOES whihc you can read about in this POST THE LOOK Thanks for reading! Let me know what you think in the comments. xoxo Mimi G
- WHY I LOVE MAKING MY OWN SHOES
I just made another pair of shoes that I simply love and as I was finishing up I was thinking of why I love making my own shoes. As someone who is passionate about fashion and style, I have always loved finding unique pieces to add to my wardrobe. However, in recent years, I have discovered a new love for making my own shoes. There is something incredibly satisfying about creating a pair of shoes from scratch. From selecting the right materials to assembling the pieces, every step of the process requires careful attention to detail and a deep appreciation for the craft. One of my favorite parts of making my own shoes is the ability to customize them to my exact specifications. Whether I'm adding a pop of color or experimenting with different textures and patterns, I have complete control over the final product. But the joy of shoemaking isn't just in the finished product. It's also in the journey of learning new techniques and honing my skills. I love the challenge of taking on a new design or figuring out how to solve a problem in the construction process. Making my own shoes has become a real passion of mine. From the creative freedom to the sense of accomplishment and the custom aspect, it's an incredibly fulfilling craft. If you're looking for a new hobby to try, I highly recommend giving shoemaking a shot. I plan to add some more courses to Sew It Academy soon but for now, you can purchase heel components from my SHOP. Here are a few pics of the process and of course my finished shoes!
