  • DIY FLORAL TOP + PATTERN REVIEW V8977

Hi Darlings! TGIF. I woke up with a headache this morning after going to bed without drinking coffee, if you don’t already know I drink coffee before bed because it relaxes me..lol I know it sounds nuts but it’s true. The hubby and I will make a cup of joe and sit on the bed watching TV and sipping our coffee, we talk; laugh and then we…….go to sleep 😉 Last night however we had dinner with Chastidy and her boyfriend, and when we got home, I crashed hard! I had only had 3.5hrs of sleep the night before so I couldn’t wait to hit the bed. Since I did not drink my coffee I woke up with a headache (Yes, fully aware of caffeine addiction) #ineedhelp lol Since there is not rest for the weary, I needed to get up and at it today with a long list of to-do’s, so I am working a very colorful and happy mood inducing DIY top with jeans. I also wanted to mention that I am now going to be suggesting a flat shoe option (below) with my looks for my darlings who don’t wear heels. xoxo DIY Top Pattern V8977 HERE / Fabric HERE / Steve Madden Heels (option) HERE or HERE / Aldo Clutch / Flat Shoe Option HERE and HERE Pattern Description: V8977 View C Very loose-fitting top has front pleats, shaped hemline, wrong side shows on back hemline, and back button Pattern Sizing:  I cut the x-small (it is very loose fitting and has a ton of ease) Fabric Used: Rayon found HERE Use code MIMI10 for 10% off Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes I think it does. Were the instructions easy to follow? This is such a great pull over top to make. It is fast and easy to make. The buttons are sewn on so there are no actual buttonholes needed. What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the flowy look, the back, and the buttons. Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I did not make any. Would you sew it again? Yes I see a few more in my future 😉 Would you recommend it to others? Yes! #8977 #Jeans #flowing #florals #vogue #top

  • DIY Distressed Denim Skirt + Pattern Review

Hi Darlings, I just finished posting this months project for Michael Levine Fabrics. I had such a old time filming it because not only I show you how to make a denim skirt using a basic pattern but I also show you how to distress it. The post is HERE including the video and fabric links. The sweater is from target. I just could not pass it up! I think I bought it in 3 different prints for layering this fall. Pattern Sew Along Video HERE / Steve Madden Wedges (option) HERE / Target Sweater (option) HERE Pattern Description: M6361 Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Nope Were the instructions easy to follow? The pattern is pretty straight forward. I added a few things to achieve the look I wanted but other than that it is a great basic pattern. The sew along video along with the distressing can be found HERE What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I wanted a denim skirt and View D was a great starting point. Fabric Used: Stretch Denim Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Added belt loops, tapered skirt and distressed it. Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? YES! #sweater #denim #leopard #mccalls #6361 #distress #skirt

  • Essence Street Style Block Party & Awards

Hi Darlings, I had such a great time attending the Essence Street Style Awards  and block party while in NY. I had the opportunity to speak with the designers, see the amazing wraps they designed for the Chevy Cruze and spent time covering the events with blogger Gabi Fresh and Karen Blanchard. The block party was held at the Dumbo Lofts Archway, and it was a blast! I think my favorite part of the block party, aside from having so many of you come and say hello, was watching Jazmine Sullivan perform. I also really enjoyed watching all the amazing street style in attendance and of course hanging back in the VIP room. #streetstyle #ChevyCruze #awards #nyc #BlockParty #essence

  • Easy DIY Pullover Dress + Pattern Review

Hi Darlings, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! We have been pretty busy over here. Yesterday at church, as I sat there listening to my pastor, I was again given confirmation of everything that has been happening in our lives. We are going through a MAJOR change in the next week and although I have yet to post about it, I will soon. When we make decisions we pray, wait for confirmation and then move full steam ahead, LOL! We are all so excited, but there is so much to do in the next two weeks that I can hardly imagine getting it done, but we will. Because of the limited time we have had lately I wanted to get some sewing in for myself but needed something, quick, easy and that required little brain power. This Burda 6988 pattern is now a FAVORITE! It’s fast, easy, needs no zippers or buttons, and can be made so many different ways. It was cut and sewn in about 2hrs on Saturday night for church on Sunday. I am addicted to black and white looks and when I pulled this pattern out I knew immediately what I was going to do. After I finished sewing it I ran up to Target and snagged this white belt that was perfect for my look. I also love that the dress sorta looks like a top and skirt. Below is my review and pics. Pattern Description: Pullover Jersey Dress B6988 Pattern Sizing: I cut the smallest size (8) and then took it in a bit. Fabric: Ponte Black HERE and Off White HERE (use code “MIMI10” for 10% off) Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes I think so. Were the instructions easy to follow? So easy and fast. I love this pattern and will be making it again. Great for beginners. What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked the dropped waistline, pullover ease and flared skirt. Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I ended up taking off about 3.5″ all the way around, there was too much ease for me and it was too boxy at the waist so I just took out 1″ from the CB/CF and the rest off the sides. I also added a lining to the skirt portion because I was using an off white fabric and wanted to make sure I had coverage. I cut the lining same as the main fabric, joined them at the waist and then attached it as once to the bodice. Conclusion: Great dress to make! and I can see it so many color combo’s #6988 #michaelkors #pullover #colorblocked #stevemadden #DIY #burda #Dress

  • My Oliso Smart Iron

Hi Darlings, I get SO MANY questions about my Oliso Smart Iron that I thought I would share the review video I did and also some of my current thoughts on the Oliso Smart Iron more than a year later. Sewing and ironing go hand in hand and you cant do one without the other so why not make the ironing process, which most of us don’t enjoy anyway, more enjoyable. *This is NOT a sponsored but if you use the links provided in the post I do earn a commission which is always very much appreciated* I got the Oliso 1600 Iron in May 2013 and since then I have only used my Oliso. In the video below I shared my initial thoughts (in May 2013) on the Smart Iron and a year later I love it just as much.  Here are some of my favorite things.. The steam on this iron is fantastic, it’s powerful steam is continuous and provides horizontal or vertical blasts! The iTouch feature is still my favorite feature. It lifts with the touch of my hand and lowers when I stop ironing (this feature can be turned off) The one thing I will say is that it has ruined me for any other iron, and when I travel and go to use the hotel iron I forget that it doesn’t auto lift when my hand comes off, lol! It’s lightweight, which is great on my already overworked wrists. It stays hot for over 20 minutes before shutting off, which is AMAZING when you are sewing, because you don’t have to wait in-between seams for your iron to heat up again. It has a 2″ detailer tip with which makes getting into corners super easy. Most important for me is that the iron does NOT leak on me! every iron I have owned at one point or another has started to leak or drip water while ironing. It’s been over a year now and it has yet to leak on me. I have had so many irons and have even used the gravity feed irons and although I have to fill this one up with water often I still prefer this iron. Check out the video I did last year below and click HERE to order yours. #oliso #sewing #smart #iron #ironing

  • What Inspires And Motivates Me

Hi Darlings, Every time someone asks me what inspires me I want to burst into tears, because I immediately think of my kids and husband. You might find it hard to believe, but I am asked that question often; in interviews, conversations and emails from women all over the world trying to find bits of inspiration to help get them through the day. When I was 15 I ran away from home, not just down the street to a friend’s house, but across the US from Chicago to Los Angeles, and like all delusional teenagers, I knew nothing was ever going to happen to me, “Bad things only happen to other people but certainly not me.” As you can imagine, I quickly found out that not only could bad things happen to me, but they could and did happen…a lot. I became a teen mom; I was homeless, I begged strangers for money; I was in abusive relationships over and again, I was homeless again with my now oldest daughter and I struggled to get through every day knowing that there was something else I was supposed to do with my life. There had to be something else I could offer my children. I was overworked, exhausted, and as a single mom, was at a point in my life where I thought my lot in life was to struggle. I would come home from work, lock myself in the bathroom and cry hysterically and sometimes uncontrollably until I could manage to walk out of the bathroom and make dinner for the kids. Even through all the terrible things my kids and I suffered through during those years, I always knew that one-day I was going to do something great. I met my husband in 2005, and that day changed my life forever. He was someone who I knew was going to make me better just by being around him. He was joyful, faithful to his beliefs, and loved me more than anyone had ever shown me. He taught me, and my girls that love did not come with pain and hardship, but it came with understanding, patience, kindness and unconditional acceptance. Shortly after we were married I began to share my love of sewing, fashion and crafting with the world via my blog. At first it seemed like such a superficial hobby but I quickly learned that my blog was empowering women all over the world to start a new hobby, step out on faith, find their creative spirits, and just make themselves feel and look better. I was amazed at the amount of emails that came across my desk of women sharing their stories with me, and telling me that I had helped them overcome a challenge in their lives, a tragedy, a job loss, a divorce, and that’s when it all hit me… I was sharing my life with these women who were just like me at different points in my life. I started to look at my blog in a whole new light and realized that my sharing, inspiring and empowering of these women was what kept me inspired and motivated. Every day that I wake up I think of the hardships, the struggles and pain that I have been through, but instead of crying, I smile. I smile because it was just a moment in time, and I overcame it, moved on from it and now embrace it because it shaped me into the mom and woman I am today. It reminds me that we are not alone, and when you are going through something, there is someone else going through it too, and if I can use my talent and faith in God to spread love, then I’m doing my part to give back what has been given to me. I am inspired by the look in my children’s eyes, their approval of me and my accomplishments. I am inspired by my husbands unwavering love for me, and I am inspired by the countless women who work every day to make a better life for themselves and their families. I stood in front of 200 women this past July during my annual conference, and as I spoke about my life, as I faced this group who had come to hear me speak, I realized just how far I have come, and I burst into tears. I tried so hard not to cry but at that moment I realized that these women who looked to me for inspiration were, in fact, the ones inspiring me. #family #friendships #inspiration #motivation

  • DIY Dress + Pattern Review

Hi Darlings, I am in NY until Wednesday and I have a ton to share and post but today I am on the run and off to the Simplicity offices. I did however want to share this DIY dress and pattern review which I had hoped to post on Friday but didn’t get a chance to edit the pics. So on to this dress….I made V9021 last week out of this nonstretch knit fabric that was supposed to be my wearable muslin. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the sleeves so I figured I would make it and if I liked it I would wear to Church the following day. I finished it last Saturday night and did not try it. I knew it was going to fit, so I went to bed. On Sunday when I went to get dressed and put the dress on I loved it but when I turned to the side you could see my bra because the sleeve openings are very low. As much as I am “fashion forward” I was not about to go to church bra strap showing, lol!!! So I took it off and hand sewed stitched the opening closed about 2.” The fabric is great because although its technically a knit it has no stretch to it, so I was able to use it like I would a woven. Now that I know I love the sleeves I plan to make it again out of a stretch sateen I have in Navy.
