- DIY Dress With Bralette + Pattern Review S8132
HI DARLINGS! I love this pattern so much. It is super easy to sew up and the bralette sews up so fast. I plan to make this combo a lot this summer. I NEVER sew for anyone (my kids if they ask) but it was such a fun pattern to make up that I offered myself up to Tieko and told her I would make one for her, LOL! The dress is from a Chambray I had in my stash and the bralette is a stretch lace. The pattern isn’t online yet but you can find it at the stores for sure. My pattern review is below and if you are wondering my shades and wedges are both old and from Steve Madden. My jewelry is mostly from Old Navy and Michael Kors. Pattern Sizing: I cut the 6 Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes! Oh my gosh I LOVE this pattern. I will be making a ton of these bralette’s and dresses. What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love everything! Fabric Used: This is chambray for the dress and I used a stretch lace for the bralette. Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? YES!!! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! Sign up below for a special launch date rate, news, info on bonus classes and more. - TIPSY TUESDAY: WHY + HOW TO PRE-TREAT YOUR FABRIC
HI DARLINGS! Okay I get asked this question all the time so here it is… YES you should pre-treat your fabric before cutting it. Let’s say you spend the day fabric shopping and get home excited to create a project… You cut it, sew it and wear it…it’s great right? Yeah… then you throw it in the wash, it shrinks and now you cant ever wear it again… sound fun? Hell no! So when I get home with a bag of fabric I set them apart by type and then pre-treat them so I can get them ready to be cut and sewn. It’s not really all that complicated a process but it is worth the time and effort so you can make sure you get all the pre-shrinking that is going to happen before you cut! Here is a quick look at some of the most common fabrics and how to treat them. PRE-WASHNG FABRICS Most if not all fabrics need to be washed in the same manner that you plan to wash them when it’s a finished garment. You can, however, skip pre-washing for 100% poly fabrics (these will not shrink) You also can skip it for fleece, vinly and faux leathers. Okay there are two obvious choices… your washing machine at home…throw your cottons, rayons, denims etc, in the wash the same way you would if it were a finished top or dress you bought at the store. (Wash one fabric at a time, do not combine several types in one wash) The second option is the dry cleaners! I send all my “good fabric” to the dry cleaners like silks, wool, chiffons etc. Same rule applies, if you bought a coat at a store I highly doubt you are going to stick it in the washing machine right? So treat the fabric you would use to make a coat the same way and have the yardage dry cleaned first. TIP I suggest you serge or zigzag the cut edges of your fabric together (not the selvage edges) before you toss it in the washing machine. This extra step will prevent raveling and the fabric from twisting into a hot mess. Knits love to shrink, so I wash my yardage in hot water. Once I make something I try not to dry it in the dryer. I usually will hang it to dry and then when almost dry I will throw it in the dryer for a few minutes on medium to knock wrinkles and get that “crunchy” feeling you get when you hang dry. Linen Wash away! Linen will soften up so much after you wash it so you can freely toss the yardage and the finished garments into both hot water and hot dryer. Cotton Voile, Challis, and Lawn (generally thin fabrics) should be washed on the gentle cycle with cool water and then pop in the dryer on a medium heat setting or hanging to dry. Rayons I wash my rayons and rayon blends in warm water and tumble dry on low heat. Silk There is so many opinions on how to handle silk but for me I use Woolite or baby shampoo (Johnson and Johnson) and I hand wash them and hang to dry or like I said before I will take it to the dry cleaners. It’s really a personal preference. Wool I dry clean 100% of the time. I hope that takes the mystery out of pre-treating fabrics. I always iron my fabrics and fold them up nicely once I am done pretreating. TELL YOUR FRIENDS! Sign up below for a special launch date rate, news, info on bonus classes and more. - DIY MULTI FABRIC SKIRT + PATTERN REVIEW BURDA 6965
HI DARLINGS! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I spent most of it sewing (yay) including this skirt that I have on. I love this skirt!! and the pattern allows for us of multi fabrics which makes it so much fun to do. I used one print in two different color ways for this skirt but I intend on making it with several different fabrics soon. Pattern review for this DIY is below. UPDATE: Fabric was located HERE and HERE by an awesome reader, thanks for sharing. I will see you guys tomorrow with a Tipsy Tuesday! If there is a tip or something you want me to cover on Tipsy Tuesdays let me know in the comments. Oh! Before I forget, for those of you who have signed up for my SEW IT! Academy you will start getting emails today so make sure to look out for it. If you have not signed up for a special rate and notifications check the end of this post. xoxo Pattern Sizing: I cut the 1O Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes! You literally cut out 2 pattern pieces. The skirt pattern piece for the view I did is just one piece cut 4 times in each of your two fabrics so you end up with 8 and then you cut the waistband. What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the fit and flare of the skirt. It is very flattering. Fabric Used: This is an Anna Maria Horner print I picked up at Michael Levine but they don’t seem to have it online. You can always call the store, tell them its on todays post and they will look it up for you. Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None Would you sew it again? HI DARLINGS! So yesterday I wrote about the modifications I was making to my SIMPLICITY #8123 PATTERN (in stores now at Joann, Walmart, Hobby Lobby etc.) as I mentioned yesterday I love being able to modify patterns to get more than the looks shown on the envelopes so I expect the same even from my own designs. I wanted a maxi length dress with pockets and gathers at the waist so I did exactly just that and showed the STEPS TO MODIFY HERE. I hope to see your modifications! and remember to tag me on social media @mimigstyle GGG TELL YOUR FRIENDS! Sign up below for a special launch date rate, news, info on bonus classes and more. - TIPSY TUESDAY: TURNING MY #8123 PATTERN INTO A MAXI
HI DARLINGS! I wanted to share a quick modification of one of my SUMMER PATTERNS #8123. I always design with modifications in mind…meaning I design a pattern with other options that I know I can share with you guys on the blog to give you even more from my patterns. This modification is on making VIEW B into a maxi skirt with a gathered waist and pockets. I plan to post my full look tomorrow so you can see the finished dress but today I thought I would share the steps I took to make this modifications. I am obsessed with denim and chambray so you will probably see a lot of that in my upcoming pattern reviews too, LOL! (similar fabric HERE) For pattern piece #17 (skirt back) add length (shown in pink) and add 4 ” to the width of the pattern at the center back (shown in yellow) Do the same thing to pattern piece #16 (left skirt front) but instead of adding all 4″ to one side you are going to add 2″ to each side of this pattern piece (shown in yellow) For pattern piece #15 (right front skirt) you are going to add length same as above and 4″ to the side seam (shown in yellow) Once you have altered the skirt you will need to cut out THIS POCKET PATTERN (print and cut) and attach it to the side of each skirt side seam (you can view how to add the pockets in THIS VIDEO (time stamp 4:25) continue sewing the dress as per the instructions or you can watch my step-by-step sew along video HERE before attaching your skirt to the bodice you will need to gather your skirt pieces to fit on to your bodice. I can’t wait for you to see the final dress tomorrow! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! Sign up below for a special launch date rate, news, info on bonus classes and more. HI DARLINGS! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I am so excited about the next few months because of course there is the conference coming up in July, the SEW IT! Online School launching next month, with Mother’s Day, and the kids getting out of school. There is so much planning to do! This weekend I had a little time to sew something up so I pulled out a pattern that has been on my to sew list for some time. This is V8896 and although it doesn’t look like much on the envelope it’s actually a really fast and easy pattern when you are short on time. The pattern review and fabric options are below. After making the dress I had some extra fabric left over so I thought I would make myself a head wrap… I mean why not? lol… You are also going to see THESE SHOES a lot ( previously worn HERE) because they are my current favorites! Pattern Sizing: I cut the 8 Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes Were the instructions easy to follow? Its the perfect dress, lol but I also really liked the gathered shoulders and the maxi length option which I think I will make this summer. Fabric Used: I used a cotton spandex in this yellow stripe. HERE are some really great prints that can be used for this pattern. Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None. Would you recommend it to others? YES! TELL YOUR FRIENDS!
