Hi, Darlings! I was gearing up to take a break until after Christmas but I got this huge burst of sewjo and so I have been sewing a lot. This DIY Denim Trench Coat Using Simplicity #9389 is a big hit already on Instagram, lol. I love this jacket so much. It was certainly a labor of love because if you have ever worked with denim and topstitching you know it can be labor intensive. I was inspired by a denim jacket I saw on Pinterest so I grabbed some fabric from Melanatedfabrics.com and got to work. Pattern and fabric details are below.
FABRIC USED for my DIY Denim Trench Coat
This is the DENIM BLUE from Melanated Fabrics and it is beautiful. 10 oz denim and 100% cotton. Make sure to wash your denim before cutting to avoid shrinking after the fact.
PATTERN USED
This is one of the patterns that my hubby designed for my Mens patterns with Simplicity and it is so good. I used the size 40 for an oversized look without it being too big. The pattern is currently on sale at simplicity.com for $5.99.
CHANGES I MADE
I added a pleat to the back vent, made the collar wider by 1/2", and I also squared off and lengthened the storm flap. I made the epaulettes wider too. The ties at the sleeves were great as is but I wanted them long and to wrap around my wrist so I made them a bit wider and longer.

What a beautiful and inspiring project! The attention to detail—like the pleated back vent and collar width—truly shows how thoughtful design elevates a DIY piece from functional to signature-worthy.
as someone who creates digital stamp tools for designers and makers, I love how your coat feels like a personal “brand” in fabric form 🌟. If you ever want to add an authentic touch to your sewing patterns, project PDFs, or even handmade tags, our free online tool lets you generate custom, legally compliant digital stamps (company seals, signature chops, or even playful artist marks) in seconds—no design skills needed.
This denim trench is stunning! The topstitching and structure really shine, almost like how good landscape lighting installation naples brings out every detail in a beautiful outdoor space.
This denim trench coat project looks absolutely fantastic! Working with denim and double topstitching is definitely a challenge, and Yes or No you've clearly mastered it here. The inspiration from Pinterest and the choice of fabric from Melanated Fabrics really paid off for this stunning creation.
The denim topstitching alone on something this size is a whole project — props for following through, the contrast stitching is what makes that jacket. Simplicity #9389 has a great silhouette but it's deceptively involved with all the topstitching detail and the collar/lapel construction; people sleep on how much fitting work a trench actually needs. Pre-washing 10oz denim was the right call too, learned that one the hard way once. Love the Melanated Fabrics pick; their denims always have such good weight and color.
